Cyclocross /ˈsīkləˌkrôs/ noun – an off-road form of bicycle racing, featuring hills, turns, sand pits, and sometimes muddy terrain, that requires a rider to carry the bicycle over obstacles and up stairs.
Kick Cancer – a new initiative launched by the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, our Official Charity Partner. The Kick Cancer campaign is designed to educate people about the 5 basic steps that can reduce the risk of cancer, one of which is an active lifestyle. Race your bike, stay healthy, kick cancer.
The Kick Cancer Cyclocross Derby is a day of fun competition designed for racers of all abilities. Previous cyclocross experience is not required or expected. However, outrageous costumes and the characteristic frivolity that often accompany cyclocross are strongly encouraged. Come on out and experience why cyclocross is one of North America’s fastest growing sports. There will be prizes both for results and for spirit.
The day will include the following races:
- Corporate Race: employees of local businesses and organizations team up with a chance to see how well they can work together. The race will take place in a relay format, with companies in similar fields competing against their cross-town colleagues for bragging rights (Top Law Firm, Top Engineering Firm, Top Coffee Shop, Top Fitness Facility, etc.).
- University Race: intercollegiate rivalry gets a new twist as Manitoba’s universities and colleges demonstrate their school spirit in a cyclocross race. Schools from across the country are welcome as well! Open to students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
- Open Race: an opportunity for anyone to try a standard cyclocross race. With a fun twist. The race will take place in the dark, a common cyclocross tradition. So if you’ve always wanted an opportunity to try one of the night races at DarkCross, here’s your chance.
Participants in all events are encouraged to make a donation in support of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation and its efforts to eradicate cancer. Charitable receipts are available for donations of $15 or more. Click here to make a donation.
